Between the sheets your heat fills me with warmth, I stretch my arms for it only to collapse in the empty space where you are not. Appreciation of the time together glows white hot in my memory, leaving imprints of their flames behind my eyes. I wake with hot tears rolling from my cheeks from seeing flashes of the truth. Greater understanding of what you really meant hits me harder than the first time. A vision of a window being shut lasts a split second but the message is heard. A door shuts. A record scratches. A mirror breaks. The heart shatters. Now my eyes won’t close. I watch the shadows in the room turn pink. The dawn quickly approaches and I know the rising sun is what will reset my trapped soul. On the roof I am accompanied by canvas and paints, the morning is still early and quiet. And so becomes my mind.
