MIPS Helmets: Helmets with yellow “MIPS” stickers are popping up for most activities and sports. I’m no neuroscientist, but I hope to help you understand this concept. Helmets that contain a Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), will have two, smooth-surfaced components on the interior of the helmet to reduce friction upon impact. The goal is to prevent impact forces from exerting a rotational force on your brain. The two smooth surfaced interior components of the helmet allow the outer shell to be struck and slide around your head. Contrast that with simply having the impact force transferred to your skull without the outer shell being able to slide smoothly to imagine how the rotational force on your brain is created. If you partake in any sport or activity that a helmet is suggested for, please perform diligent research into MIPS.
